my new friend

i have a new friend, and you can see him at my photoblog. his name is marvel and i adopted him from the SF SPCA. it's really a great place to adopt a kitty because unlike most shelters they have a no kill policy and each animal has its own "condo" complete with chairs and tv and toys to simulate a real living environment. pets from there are happy and well adjusted because they haven't been caged up for months at time.

if you considering getting a cat or a dog, i suggest getting an adult instead of a kitten or puppy. they require less effort to train, they will love you just as much, and it is harder for them to find homes. i chose marvel from some 60 adult cats, and he was on a short list of 5 really great kitties, any which would have made a great pet.

Well...
Actually, thats exactly why its better to adopt from a high kill shelter.....because you are saving a life. Most animals there have only been there for less than a week before they are put down, especially in your neck of the woods. And, there are a ridiculously high number of "owner surrenders" which are very well behaved, trained animals (cats and dogs) at shelters. Shelters are actually MOSTLY owner surrenders......for stupid reasons like "He's got too much energy for us" (duh, he's a puppy) or "We don't have enough time to spend with him" (so we'd rather see him die).
No pet that has been given up by it's family is ever very well adjusted. Cats and dogs just tend to be loyal to those who save them. It's hard to really tell the "adjusted" thing too (especially with dogs) because often times they are depressed in the shelter (reads as mellow) and it takes them a while to get used to a family and trust them.........
I'll hop off my soapbox now.
